What the Tedee–Smoobu connection does
Tedee is a smart lock that mounts onto your existing door cylinder. The cylinder stays, your physical key still works, but the lock can also be opened by app, access code or remote command. For short-term rentals the interesting part is the link to your booking system: as soon as a booking arrives, a time-limited code can be created for exactly that stay.
Smoobu manages the booking data, Tedee manages the lock. The code is valid from check-in and expires after check-out, and you can have a message template deliver it to the guest automatically. If you already know Nuki, the logic will feel familiar from our Nuki guide — the steps are very similar, though menu names can differ.
Step 1 — Check your hardware and remote access
For Smoobu to create codes on the lock, the lock has to be reachable over the internet. Bluetooth alone is not enough. Which parts you need depends on the model — confirm this on tedee.com before you buy.
Tedee lock + Bridge
The lock itself (for example Tedee PRO or Tedee GO — model names per tedee.com) mounts on your cylinder. For internet access these models generally use a Tedee Bridge; whether your model strictly requires one is stated in the current Tedee documentation.
- Set up and calibrate the lock in the Tedee app
- Connect the Bridge to Wi-Fi and power if your model needs one
- Confirm the lock shows as online in the Tedee app
Tedee Keypad
The Keypad is the number pad next to the door. Guests type their code — no app, no Bluetooth pairing. For short-term rentals it is the most convenient option.
- Pair the Keypad with the lock in the Tedee app
- Check the battery level regularly
- Guests do not need their own Tedee account
Step 2 — Link your Tedee account to Smoobu
- In Smoobu: open Settings and look for the integrations or smart lock area. The exact menu label can change — the Smoobu help centre has the current path.
- Choose Tedee from the list of supported lock providers.
- Sign in with your Tedee account and grant Smoobu access to your locks.
- Select the lock you want to connect.
- Assign the lock to the matching property in Smoobu. With several apartments, each apartment gets its own lock.
- Save. The connection status should now show as active.
If you later change your Tedee password or revoke access inside Tedee, you may have to re-authorise the connection in Smoobu.
Step 3 — Enable an access code per booking
Once connected, tell Smoobu to create a separate code for every booking automatically.
- Open the settings of the connected lock in Smoobu.
- Turn on automatic access code generation per booking.
- Check the validity window. Check-in time to check-out time is the usual choice; widen it if you need a cleaning buffer.
- Save. Existing bookings do not automatically get a code retroactively — add those by hand if needed.
You will see the code in the booking details once Smoobu has synced it to Tedee. Test this once with a booking of your own before the first real guest arrives.
Step 4 — Send the code to the guest automatically
A code is worthless if it does not reach the guest in time. The most reliable approach is a message template that inserts the code for you.
- In Smoobu: open the message templates in the automation or messages area.
- Edit your pre-arrival template or create a new one.
- Insert the access code through the editor's variable picker instead of typing it by hand. This avoids typos in the placeholder.
- Schedule the send a few days before check-in. Many hosts choose 48 to 72 hours.
- Save the template. It now applies to all new bookings.
Keep privacy and security in mind
A smart lock records when the door was opened. If you use access logs, tell your guests about it in the house information and restrict access to your own account. Do not share your Tedee login with cleaners — create separate access or separate codes for them instead.
This is not a topic for blanket answers: how long logs may be kept and what belongs in your privacy notice depends on your situation. When in doubt, ask a data protection adviser.
Troubleshooting common issues
No code appears in the booking
Usually the lock or Bridge was offline when Smoobu tried to create the code. Check in the Tedee app that the lock is online and restore the Wi-Fi connection if needed. Then open the booking in Smoobu and trigger code generation again. If that does not help, disconnect the lock in Smoobu and connect it again.
The guest says the code does not work
Check the validity window first: before the check-in time the code is not active yet. Then confirm the Keypad is correctly paired with the lock and the batteries are charged enough. Ask the guest to enter the code slowly and completely.
Smoobu reports the lock as offline
Restart the Bridge (unplug and replug the power) and check whether your router's Wi-Fi credentials have changed. Also make sure the Bridge is within radio range of the lock, since thick walls can interfere with the connection.
The message was sent but contains no code
Either the message went out before the code was generated, or the variable was inserted incorrectly. Open the template and replace the placeholder through the variable picker. Also check that the send time falls after the code is generated.
New bookings suddenly stop getting codes
The authorisation between Smoobu and Tedee may have expired or been revoked in Tedee. Disconnect the lock in the Smoobu settings and link your Tedee account again. Codes that already exist generally stay valid — still verify this with a test booking.
Note: this guide is based on the public documentation of Smoobu and Tedee as of 22 September 2026.
